In Chat We Trust?

AI and Christianity are colliding in ways few of us could have imagined just a few years ago. Artificial intelligence can answer questions, organize our lives, help with work, research Scripture, provide advice, and even carry on conversations that feel remarkably personal.

But that raises an important question for Christians:

Are we turning to Chat to solve the crises in our lives—or are we turning to Christ?

In this episode of Echoing Truth, we discuss the rapidly growing influence of artificial intelligence and the danger of allowing a useful tool to become something much more significant in our lives.

Is AI a Tool or a Source of Truth?

Artificial intelligence can be incredibly useful. It can help us research, organize information, learn new subjects, plan projects, and accomplish tasks in seconds that once took hours.

But there is an important distinction Christians cannot afford to lose:

AI can be a tool. It cannot become our source of truth.

As AI becomes easier, faster, and more personal, we need to consider whether instant answers are beginning to replace prayer, biblical meditation, spiritual discernment, and patiently seeking wisdom from God.

Jesus prayed in John 17:17:

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”

Our ultimate standard for spiritual truth isn’t an algorithm. It is the Word of God.

Are Christians Becoming Dependent on AI?

One of the biggest concerns surrounding AI and faith isn’t simply whether artificial intelligence sometimes gives incorrect information.

The deeper issue is dependency.

Even if AI gave us the correct answer every time, we would still need to ask ourselves where we are instinctively turning when we need wisdom, encouragement, guidance, or answers.

Are we praying?

Are we opening Scripture?

Are we seeking counsel from mature believers?

Are we talking with our pastors, spouses, parents, friends, and mentors?

Or are we immediately opening ChatGPT, Copilot, or another AI assistant?

Technology can provide information, but information is not the same thing as wisdom—and it certainly isn’t the same thing as a relationship with Christ.

Can AI Replace Human Relationships?

We also discuss another potential consequence of digital dependence: the loss of real human relationships.

AI is always available. It answers quickly. It doesn’t get tired of our questions. And it can often tell us exactly what we want to hear.

But there is wisdom and experience in the people God has placed around us that an artificial intelligence system cannot replace.

There are parents, grandparents, pastors, mentors, friends, husbands, wives, and fellow believers who have actually lived through circumstances we are facing.

Sometimes the person sitting next to us has something we need to hear.

And sometimes they need us.

If technology becomes our default relationship, we risk losing something profoundly important about Christian fellowship and community.

Scripture Must Remain Central

Second Timothy 3:16–17 reminds us that Scripture is breathed out by God and equips the believer for every good work.

AI isn’t God-breathed.

It can retrieve information about Scripture. It can help locate passages, compare ideas, summarize material, and serve as a powerful research tool.

But it cannot replace the authority or transforming power of God’s Word.

That’s the distinction Christians need to maintain as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life.

Using AI Without Losing Your Faith

This isn’t a conversation about rejecting technology.

AI is an extraordinary tool, and we discuss many of the ways it can genuinely make life easier and help us become more productive.

The challenge is learning to use the tool without allowing the tool to become our guide.

Artificial intelligence should never replace:

Scripture
Prayer
Our relationship with Christ
The local church
Christian fellowship
Godly counsel
Real human relationships

Technology will continue to change. AI will become more capable. The questions surrounding it will only become more significant.

That’s why this probably won’t be our last conversation about artificial intelligence on Echoing Truth.

When you need truth, wisdom, and direction—where do you turn first?
